Mother’s Day Brunch on the Grill

She brought us into the world (with great physical discomfort). She bandaged skinned knees and wiped runny noses (and other parts, too). She packed school lunches and made sure we did our homework. And she invited the guests, bought the food, set the table, and cleaned up, while husbands and grandfathers fired up the grills.

Mom!

In my family, my mother was the family grill master. And she grilled like she did everything in life—with the exuberance of a raging fire.

I mean that quite literally. No chimney starters or lighter fluid for Frances Raichlen. No, she lit the coals with gasoline, once nearly burning down our house. Her specialty was steak—cooked Pittsburgh rare, meaning that the outside came charred black as coal and the inside so rare you could hear its heartbeat. Now that was a steak, and I can still taste it a lifetime later.

Yes, mom has been with us and supported us every step of the way. So let’s show her a little love on Mother’s Day—it’s the least we can do! And what better way to show our love than by preparing brunch for her the best way we know how—on the grill?

P.S. Tell your mom you love her—not just on Mother’s Day, but every day. One day she won’t be around, and you’ll wish you had said “I love you” more often.
